A foul odor was detected in the Sam Houston Elementary School cafeteria while students were eating breakfast Monday. As a precautionary measure, the students, faculty and staff were immediately evacuated and local authorities were called.

The Port Arthur Fire Department, Port Arthur Independent School District maintenance and safety supervisors, and maintenance staff surveyed the building for about 15 to 20 minutes. The fire department did not find any detection of any harmful substance and upon a thorough inspection, the students and staff were allowed to re-enter the building a little before 8:30 a.m.

Students that were not able to eat breakfast before the interruption were given another opportunity at 8:50 a.m.
